The McNab Snowboarding Backcountry Freeride & Splitboarding courses have developed through 20+ years of me simply following my passion for Climbing, Riding, Instructing, Coaching and Guiding.

When I started McNab Snowboarding, way back in 1995, there was no manual to follow, there were no other programs to copy and so I followed my instincts, my passion, built on my experiences and simply learned along the way.

It has been a long, fantastic, voyage of discovery, yet after 20 years it still feels like I am standing at the start of the journey.

My passion for riding still increases year by year, even day by day and I am constantly learning, developing and updating my program to bring you the very best on the Mountain experience possible.

My Freeride and Backcountry Programs haven’t come about overnight. they have come about through my passion for riding, my love for the High Mountains and my 30 years of experience living and riding with in them.

I am very proud of my Freeride Courses and Backcountry Courses and hope you find my 2019 Program as exciting as I do.

Come and join my journey…

THE FREERIDE PROGRAM

There is a natural progression to my course program that starts with learning and understanding Snowboard technique with my Technical Performance Clinic.

The Technical Performance Clinic is suited to riders of Intermediate level and above, a minimum of 3 weeks of riding experience is essential in order for you to get the most out of the course, but riders with many years behind them will also benefit greatly from this course. Here you will gain the inside knowledge and understand the essential elements that make up perfect Snowboard technique. The Technical Performance Clinic sets the Foundations for your future and for all my other courses.

Next in the Progression is my Off Piste Freeride Clinic. Here we continue the progression, building on the solid foundations covered in the Technical Performance Clinic (with a recap for those new to the progression) whilst taking the task to a higher performance level. We begin to work beyond technique fitting your riding to the Mountains natural terrain, increasing your vision of what is possible and inspiring your ride. The Off Piste Freeride Clinic sets the standard for the next step in my course progression which moves beyond Technique and into my Backcountry Program.

Bridging the gap between my Technique clinics and my Backcountry program is the Slackcountry Freeride course.
This course is designed for the Freerider trying to fit everything in to a full on Shred week giving you a little bit of Technique, some Off Piste action and a quick Intro to Splitboarding with out venturing out for a full day touring mission. Slackcountry is the term used to describe the terrain found just beyond the boundaries of the Ski area, a kind of buffer zone between the Ski area and the True ‘Out There’ Backcountry. The goal of the Slackcountry Freeride courses is to just simply get out on your board, find the best terrain with easy access and Freeride, Freeride and Freeride some more.

THE BACKCOUNTRY PROGRAM

My unique ‘Backcountry program’ is designed for experienced ‘Snowboarders’ riding in the ‘Beyond Technique’ stage of development. This means that ‘Technical Instruction’ is not the main focus of the Backcountry Program, although riding technique tips and advice will be part of every course.

My Backcountry Program is designed for riders looking to explore the “Fine Art of Freeriding’ amongst the natural terrain of the High Mountains, the home of Big Mountain Freeriding.

All of my Backcountry Courses include the use of Splitboards for Backcountry Access.

All of my Backcountry Courses include and Avalanche safety and awareness training along with all essential equipment and Avalanche Search and Rescue training and are Guided by myself or another fully qualified UIAGM High Mountain Snowboard Guide that is a member of my team.

My Backcountry Courses follow a progression that starts with my Slackcountry Freeride Course or my Backcountry Intro Course.

My Slackcountry Freeride Course bridges the gap between my Technique clinics and my Backcountry program and is designed for the Freerider trying to fit everything in to a full on ‘Shred’ week giving you a little bit of Technique, some Off Piste action and a quick Intro to Splitboarding with out venturing out on a full day Backcountry touring mission. Slackcountry is the term used to describe the terrain found just beyond the boundaries of the Ski area, a kind of buffer zone between the Ski area and the True ‘Out There’ Backcountry. The goal of the Slackcountry Freeride courses is to just simply get out on your board, find the best terrain within easy access of the lifts and Freeride, Freeride and Freeride some more.

My Backcountry Intro Course is designed for those new to the Backcountry and to Splitboarding but not to Freeriding. It is designed for those that want get out beyond the boundaries of the Patrolled area, deep into the heart of the high mountains. Using Splitboards we will climb and tour out amongst the glaciers and high peaks to explore the realm of the Big Mountain Freerider.

The next course in my Backcountry Program is the Backcountry Freeride Course. This course is designed for those that have previous Backcountry and Splitboard experience but now want to take it up a level. 5 days of Splitboard touring and Big Mountain Freeriding at a fast pace with a group size of 6.

Following the Backcountry Freeride Course my Backcountry Program now fans out to concentrate on the different aspects and specialist areas of the serious Backcountry Freerider.
