MCNAB SNOWBOARDING

Established in 1995 by professional Freeride Snowboarder, UIAGM High Mountain Guide and International Snowboard Teacher & Coach Neil McNab, ‘McNab Snowboarding‘ was one of the World’s first companies to run specialist Backcountry Snowboard courses and today lead the way with a unique and exciting program of Technical Freeride sessions, Slackcountry and Backcountry Splitboard Courses and Snowboard Expeditions in the Alps, Pyrenees and mountain ranges all around the World.

Neil McNab is one of only a specialist few UIAGM certified Snowboard Guides qualified to Teach and Guide snowboarders in the Backcountry of the High Mountains. This was my first time #heliboarding guiding in Kr

This was my first time #heliboarding guiding in Krasnaya Polyana, 5 years before it would become the host location for the winter #Olympics
At the time it was a pretty basic with a few old chair lifts that creaked and groaned, horses roaming the streets and one vodka fueled bar at the bottom of the ‘piste’. It snowed in the nights and sun filled the days so we could fly out and score perfect run after run. I remember on approaching one of the pick spots (LZ) I’d seen a bear walk across and disappear into the bushes near by. I stopped and pulled the group to a halt, but one of the team, over keen for fresh tracks out front shot by me and kept on going, despite my shouts to stop, heading down towards where I’d just seen the bear disappear. He got a fright as it shot out of the bushes and fortunately ran away and we all fell about laughing and waited for the Heli to come, a safe distance up the hill, whilst he tried to run back up towards us through the deep snow.
There’s a lesson to learn here; Never ride past your guide, he’s probably stopped for a reason.

This super simple range of movement flow puts the

This super simple range of movement flow puts the body through extensions and flexions in all the right places. Control the pressure evenly in your feet, feel for a super even pressure through your quad engagement and hip flexion, build a supple wave of movement through your spine and evenly rotate your shoulders through a full circle. Remember the top of the head stays in line with the spine. A horizontal eye line keeps things balanced.

The deep squat and hip extension in this pattern are essential movements for flowing activity and a healthy body. Build up slowly until your thighs are first, parallel with the ground for a few rotations and then start to sink deeper.

Your health, strength and flexibility needs constant and consistent routine. Keep it simple to avoid mental fatigue and so that you don’t need to skip the important stuff like range of movement work. This simple breath led flow gets me moving and ready for the day. It makes me want to do more. It takes 5 minutes so make it your daily too.

Looking back over the 30 year period of #backcount

Looking back over the 30 year period of #backcountry #guiding at mcnabsnowboarding with this short clip from a BC #freeride course in Gressoney in 2016. Gressoney is a veritable freeride Mecca with endless backcountry and #slackcountry descents, most accessible right off the lifts or with a short hike. I’ve had some memorable sessions here and have even made a day trip from #Chamonix to ride the famous Giachetti couloir (due to it being in perfect condition) with one of my BC groups. Unfortunately due to #brexit it’s more difficult to work in Italy these days (well done brexiters) but it’s definitely on my list of returns destinations.

Looks like the snow is finally arriving in the #alps now, hopefully perfect timing for my #tignes kickstarter week. Looking forward to getting back on the @mcnabsnowboards #lann and arching some turns around the mountains again.

With close to 4 decades on a snowboard and 30 years of Snowboard Guiding with mcnabsnowboarding.com it’s time to have a look back at some clips from along the way. This one is a quick drop in to get things rolling from Kamchatka 2015 from my second time Heli guiding out there. I’ll maybe talk more about this in future posts as since these times I’ve quit both Heli and long haul flights, (a decision I made for eco reasons maybe 10
Years back), but these were crazy times when I was given a bus sized Heli and an access all areas pass to fly and ride whatever took my fancy. There’s quite a lot of pressure Heli guiding and out in the land of vodka and no rules this was a whole new world and level of guiding for me and the terrain was insane and absolutely endless. Pretty good times…
